Prescription drug abuse is one of the largest epidemics facing society today.  In 2010, deaths from accidental  or misuse of prescription medications were greater than deaths from automobile accidents, for the first time even in this country (CDC).  At least 12 million people admitted to using a painkiller for non-medical reasons.  All around us, people are abusing pain meds in order to get high.  Teenagers are raiding their parent’s medicine cabinets, and throwing parties with pills.  They are more accessible than any street drugs.  They are more widely used than any other drug besides marijuana.

As a whole, the healthcare system loses over $100 billion annually to the misuse, mistreatment, addiction, and fraudulent behavior of prescription medication seekers.

So what can be done about it?

In the blog, we hope to raise awareness to the harmful effects of prescription drug abuse and misuse.  There are several ways that prescription drugs can adversely affect our society:

  1. Harm to individuals who are addicted
  2. Harm to that individuals family and friends, who are also affected by their addiction.
  3. Harm to the entire healthcare ecosystem.

The Prescription Solution blog is a destination for individuals to come to in order to get the straight facts about what is happening in society.  We will provide the latest news and breakthrough stories.  We will interview those people with inside knowledge on prescription drug abuse, including parents who have lost children to drug overdoses, doctors who deal with addicted patients on a daily basis, and individuals who suffer from chronic pain.

More importantly, we offer solutions about the best ways to curb prescription drug abuse in this country, contain the spiraling costs in healthcare, and save lives. Over the course of this blog, we will offer firm solutions and call to actions to get people involved in fight prescription drug abuse.

How can I get involved?

I’m glad you asked.  Here are the three things that you can do RIGHT NOW to start helping:

  1. Follow this blog.  Join the newsletter.
  2. Sign this Pledge.  Vow to take a stand.
  3. Be aware of what is going on, both nationally and locally.

Thanks for being a part of the movement.  Every individual counts here.  I look forward to working with you on this journey.
